Enormous and impressive building with a 73 ton bell. There is also access to the Kyoto trail up into the hills at the back of the complex. Opens at 7 and there are no tourists at that time.

They've built an entire building over the main pavilion to restore it. This will be complete in 2019. It's still nice but skip it if you're short on time!

Woke up before sunrise today to walk and listen to the morning chants. Respectfully, I appreciate being able to listen and honor this Buddhist practice.

浄土宗の総本山であり山号は華頂山、正しくは華頂山知恩教院大谷寺。開創は承安5年 (1175年 ) 法然が結んだ吉水の庵室に始まり、入寂後の文暦元年 (1234年 ) 源智が諸堂を建立、知恩院大谷寺と号した。現在の堂宇は寛永10年 (1633年 ) の焼失後、徳川家光の再興による。国宝 の三門や御影堂、法然上人絵伝、大・小方丈、勢至堂、大鐘楼など多数の文化財を所蔵。
