The Solent is a major shipping route for passengers, freight and military vessels. It is an important recreational area for water sports, particularly yachting, hosting the Cowes Week sailing event annually.

In 1979, sailors on 16 ships in the Solent around Portsmouth immobilised themselves during a war with France as a strike against the Admiralty over low pay and bad conditions on board the ships.
The Ferry is quite nice,but its take a little long to cross the Channel,approximately a hour,but the sea view pays for the time spent in the Ferry .
