For the full effect: go in the fall, early in the morning, head to the summit , and look over the fog and new day. Doesn't get much better. Though, I was born in these mountains , so I'm biased.

They've got grills and firepits and even fireplaces in pavilions, but bring your charcoal, wood, food, ice, everything as there are no services up here.
The only motorized access to the mountain is from the Parkway, at Milepost 355.3, and the summit is only a 5.0-mile detour. Don’t miss it—even on a dismal day. Read more
