Dominating the city for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory. Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the medieval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress.

Great defensive castle that's seen a lot of history. Still used as an army barracks.
Mary Queen of Scots was allowed certain privileges under guard , such as promenade outside the walls. The stretch between the SE postern to the southern great gatehouse was known as "The Lady's Walk".
Queen Mary's Tower, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, was one the oldest parts of the castle . Records show it was the original Norman entrance into the castle .
Francis Knollys was Mary Queen of Scots reluctant custodian. He came to like and respect his prisoner , who lacking the comforts she was accustomed too, continued to plead to Elizabeth I for help.
Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here from 18 May to 13 July 1568. She had fled to England to seek help from Elizabeth I in regaining her throne, but instead was arrested and imprisoned.
There is a lack of information as you walk around so make sure you pick up a guide book from the shop before you walk around.
