The Eikan-do temple was my favorite in Kyoto. Although it is known for its spectacular grounds being colored by the autumn leaves, we visited it during the summer. It was still very pretty.

The best temple I'd like to recommend. Though admission fee is the highest as ¥1,000 among other major temples , but obviously truly worth it. No regret. In my case, even better than Kiyomizudera.

It's very peaceful and you can enter the temple and its walkways. Hence this temple is really more about the worship rather than its gardens etc. Loved it!

My favorite temple in Japan. large and peaceful . The Mikaeri Amida is in an unusual pose of looking backwards over his shoulder. It is said that he is waiting for those people left behind.

If you are fortunate enough to catch the autumn colours at their peak the night illumination is gorgeous beyond belief

One of the best temples for autumn colors. You’ll be amazed (but of course you won’t be the only one there - so crowded but worth it)

Peaceful and comfortable to walk during the night, very pretty when light reflect from different colors of maple leaves.

This is off the beaten path but I loved this quiet little spot hidden on the mountain side.

Romaji: Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji

通称は永観堂。浄土宗西山禅林寺派の総本山であり、山号は聖衆来迎山 。開創は仁寿3年 (853年) 開山は空海の弟子真紹。以来真言道場 であったが、承暦年間 (1077～1081年) に永観が入寺して念仏道場 となり、のち法然の弟子清遍や浄音が住持となり浄土宗となった。本尊はみかえり阿弥陀 如来として有名で、所蔵の山越阿弥陀 図は国宝 。古来、京都での紅葉 の名所としても有名であることから多くの観光 客で賑わう。

永観堂みかえり阿弥陀 像：僧・永観が、日課の念仏を唱えて行道中の時、突如阿弥陀 様が壇から降りて永観の行道を先導し始めたので、驚いて歩みを止めると、阿弥陀 様は振り返って一言「永観おそし」と言い、再び動かなくなったという伝承が由来しています(^_^)

庭もよし、室内の展示 もよし。南禅寺から哲学の道ルートで散策するならおすすめです。

紅葉 の時期は大変美しいですが、人も多くてゆっくり見られないかも 知れません。

もみじ で有名な永観堂ならではのオリジナル御朱印帳あります。和紙・大判・1000円

出口付近に休憩処あります。
