Stand at the spot of the Wrights' first 4 flights, which took place Dec. 17, 1903. The first flight was just 40 yards and took 12 seconds, a time easily beat by a child or adult's easy jog. Try it!
Start at the visitor center and pavilion to get the context, then walk the monument and historic flight area. Very inspirational for adults and children alike.
When training for a marathon, ran around this memorial a dozen times. Cool sight, and they don't even look at you funny for running.
Long walk from the monument to the visitors building, but it was worth it. Try to make it to the Rangers Talk . Ranger Chelsy is a very dramatic speaker!!
A very photogenic and often overlooked venue onsite is life-size bronze statue of The Flyer and everyone present on day of first flight Dec 17, 1903. Made to climb on, located behind big hill .
Great place to bring the family and learn about aviation and history.
I heard the best talk by a ranger at any National Park here. Maybe even better than any Smithsonian presentation, too.
Worth the stop. You’ll need more time then you think##
Kitty Hawk was only the 6th windiest place in America. Chicago is #1. But the Wright bros came here from Dayton, OH because they liked the idea of landing on sand.
Even if you're planning to stop by only for national park passport cancellations, you're still required to pay a fee before accessing the visitor center.
The grounds (but not buildings) are dog friendly , but bring water for your best friend for the long walk to the monument at the top of the hill !
Take the step climb up is worth the view from the base of the monument .
Being able to see the location of the origin of my profession caused me to tear up. All engineers , no matter the focus, must add a visit to their Bucket List.
Great family time, walk up to the monument together!
They only take active duty military discounts ...seems absurd if you're retired or reserves since we put our time too!!
Pilot duties for the Wrights’ first flight came down to a coin toss. Wilbur won, but crashed before takeoff. Three days later, Orville managed 12 seconds in the air. (From Aerial America) Read more

If you're flying in, there's a pretty nasty bump when you get below the tree line and another as you cross the road . Also airports closed at night, no lights.
Great place to bring the family to learn about aviation and history. - Ivonne Gutierrez
This is at the top of what was once a big sand dune. This dune was key in helping the Wright Brothers figure out the the details about lift that led to the first flight. - Moe Dexler
One of those rare places where you can walk in the footsteps of history. The historical site, ranger talk and small exhibit do a good job of conveying just how accomplished the Wright brothers were. - Jonathan Sullivan
